The teachings and practices of Harav Yosef Ber Soloveitchik zt”l

Categories: Classes

Rav Yosef Ber Soloveitchik, the scion of a centuries-long line of historically leading Rabbinic scholars and religious authorities, became the rabbinic father of the “Modern Orthodox” movement of the American twentieth century. From the time he came to America and arrived in Boston, through his appointment to the highest rabbinic position within Yeshiva University’s rabbinical seminary, through the years he taught and ordained hundreds of Orthodox rabbonim (rabbis) and delivered regularly mass-attended public lectures and Torah classes, Rav Soloveitchik became known among Modern Orthodox Jews simply as “The Rov” — The Rabbi. Our rav, Rav Fischer, was among those ordained by The Rov after Rav Fischer completed his rabbinical studies at Yeshiva University’s Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS).

Our class on Rav Soloveitchik’s teachings studies laws, customs, and practices that The Rov taught his yeshiva seminary students, many of which have been integrated into contemporary Modern Orthodox practice. In studying The Rov’s teachings, we go back to the same primary-source materials that The Rov consulted, and we look at and follow how he learned that text to understand it and to determine the proper practices and customs that would flow accordingly from that learning.

Offered in Summer – June-August
